This is a checklist of the most common issues users have using the printers in the LRC:

  • Is the switchbox turned to the right letter (“A”, “B”, “C”, “D”, or “Laptop”)? The switch positions are close, - so sometimes, for example, it can look like a switchbox is on “B” but it’s really on “C.” The only way to make sure is to check by turning the knob. Try going all the way counter-clockwise, then count as you switch A, B, C . . . (Note that for laptops using the USB cable, it does not actually matter which letter the switchbox is turned to.)

  • (Laptops only):is the right printer selected? Windows XP will add a new printer each time a different printer is connected to a laptop with the USB cable. Your computer may list several HP LaserJet 4000 PCL printers. We recommend you delete all HP LaserJet 4000 series printers listed. Then the first time you use a particular printer, you should rename the printer with the printer number to avoid confusion in the future.

.

  • Is the printer out of paper, out of toner, or is there a printer jam or open printer door? Sometimes if there are only a few sheets of paper left in the tray, the printer will think it is out of paper. If the paper tray is empty or nearly empty, if a jam or open printer door is indicated, or if you get a message to replace the toner cartridge, please notify the Lab Assistant.

  • Is there a copy card in the card reader? Is the card inserted correctly? The card reader should read a dollar amount and not “invalid card” – which usually means it’s inserted backwards. Also, make sure there is enough money on your card to print the whole job. If there is not enough money on the card to print the whole job, the printer will print to that point and then stop while the display will read “DATA RECEIVED”. The display shows 3 decimal places, so make sure it says 80 ¢ and not 8¢

  • Try to clear the printer by turning off the power button on the side, then turning it back on. The printer display will read “INITIALIZING” for about 30 seconds, then it should read “READY.” When the display reads “READY”, try sending your print job again.

  • Restart the computer by going to the Start button and choosing Shut Down”, then “Restart”, then “OK”. After the computer restarts, try printing again.

  • If none of these steps work, please try another printer. If your job prints successfully at another printer, please notify the Lab Assistant that there may be a problem with the original printer.
